Project Bunbury

Seating can truly transform a space, and in this case, the idea evolved as the build progressed. Since the area is mostly used for morning coffee, we leaned into a daybed-style design — extending the bench out into the middle of the deck and supporting it on a big, rough-sawn chunk of Ironbark. It gave the space a more relaxed, inviting feel and was a big improvement on the original concept.

We also added storage lids to keep cushions tucked away and protected from the weather — practical and tidy.

One standout feature came from a spontaneous decision mid-build: the original railing was meant to be removed entirely, but after some back and forth, we decided to give it a second life. It was reinstalled above the new seating, and deck lights were added to highlight the retro 70s-style railing. Not only did it bring character, but it also helped enclose the space slightly and block the view of the shed — a win all around.
